You brood of vipers! How can you speak good things, when you are evil? (Matthew 12:34)

Some of these questions were not directed necessarily, towards us. Some of them may apply to us at times, but this one was directed to the Pharisees and religious types of Jesus' day, who were not only ignorant of God's love, but especially ignorant of the incarnate love of God who was Jesus Christ. And here the human side of Jesus was a bit disturbed by the questions being asked of Him! The question yesterday was directed to the accusation that Jesus was demonic and working with Satan. After His explanation of those things, Jesus asks this question. And the question answers itself; these men were not good, they were evil, so the "good things" being spoken were not really from their hearts or spirits.

May it not be ever said to us that we are evil and speaking good things when we are really a "brood of vipers." We are believers, thus children, of the Most High; our words and actions should speak of the good in us.

For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry? (Luke 23:31) This terrible question comes as Jesus is being led away to the trash heap where he will be crucified and die. Simon of Cyrene had just taken the cross to carry for Jesus, and Jesus hears the women wailing and crying for Him; He speaks a prophetic word, with this question thrown in: "For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?" Jesus asks us to imagine a time when things will be worse for us than we can possibly imagine. Green wood does not burn easily; dry wood does. Imagine a time when things will be worse. The answer is for us to not let things get that bad. We have voices, we should speak up. We have hands and arms, we should help out. We have faith, we should live a life that blesses God.

And the question was immediately followed by a command, "Follow me!" We can preoccupy ourselves with matters about other people, but the question Jesus asks is about us and what we are doing. And the same command follows that: Follow me! We have barely enough time to worry about our spiritual life, why spend too much time worrying about those for whom we can probably do nothing for?
